First Fridays Art Walk began with a group of residents who are passionate about art, music, poetry, dance & literature. One evening after an art opening and music jam session, a few people complained that there is nothing to do in Salinas (except in our little group of course!). Trish Triumpho Sullivan, who was tired of such complaints with no action proclaimed: "Let's create something to do in Salinas!"

Thus the 1st Fridays Art Walk was born. Began in September of 2005 with just 15 venues - marked with yellow and purple balloons - and naysayers grumbling that people in Salinas would never come to downtown after 5pm. The first Art Walk on September 2, 2005 drew more than 300 attendees and was a huge success.

Now between 1500-3000 people come to the monthly 1st Fridays Art Walk - held year-round, rain or shine - which boasts over 50 venues, many art openings, 20+ featuring live music by local talent, as well as a variety of other events, including dance performances, poetry readings, book signings, kid's art projects and street art.

Our artistic and talented residents volunteer their time to make this community event hapen every month - we are all volunteers, including the founder, Trish Triumpho Sullivan - working many hours every month to bring high quality arts and culture to the heart of Salinas. The venues are now marked with hand-painted, re-usable silk flags so we can be as green as possible.

Come and participate in our wonderful event by attending every month, displaying your art, performing music, dance, or theater, reading poetry or holding a street performance. However you wish to be involved, 1st Fridays Art Walk continues to be a free community event for you to enjoy with friends and family. There is something for everyone, all ages are welcome.
